The early part of my career was spent inside large Australian organisations — managing significant budgets, complex operations and large teams across financial services, logistics and infrastructure. Senior roles at NAB, Westpac and TNT gave me a practical, ground-level understanding of what makes businesses actually function at scale — not in theory, but in practice.

Over time I became increasingly drawn to working with business owners rather than within organisations. I could see the gap clearly: corporate operators had access to deep operational thinking, structured methodology and experienced strategic input. Most technical and trade service business owners were navigating the same complexity — without any of that support.

For the past 14+ years I've worked exclusively with technical and trade service business owners across Australia — helping them build more profitable, more operationally sound and less owner-dependent businesses. The work is commercially grounded and practically applied. It's built on a genuine understanding of how these businesses actually work — the margins, the labour pressures, the quoting and pipeline challenges, the owner dependency, the team dynamics that are specific to this sector.

Most of the owners I work with aren't lacking motivation or drive. They're carrying more operational weight than the business should realistically require — and they haven't yet had the structured support to change that.

Why Reverse Scaling works.

Most growth advice tells operators to add — more staff, more marketing, more systems, more revenue. And while none of those things are wrong in principle, adding more to a business that already has structural problems doesn't fix the problems. It amplifies them.

After working with dozens of technical and trade service businesses, I kept observing the same pattern: businesses that grew primarily by adding complexity became progressively harder to run, more dependent on the owner and less profitable per dollar of revenue. They looked successful from the outside — and were genuinely exhausting to operate from the inside.

Reverse Scaling is the approach I developed to address this directly. Before pushing for more growth, we simplify what already exists — identify where profit is leaking, where owner dependency has become embedded, and where the business is carrying more operational weight than it should. Then we fix those things first. Growth on a cleaner foundation produces a fundamentally different result: the business gets easier to run as it grows, not harder.

I work exclusively with technical and trade service businesses in Australia — electrical contractors, civil contractors, fire services, HVAC, maintenance businesses, industrial services, engineering firms and related field service businesses.

How would you describe your approach?

It sits somewhere between coaching and advisory — combining the accountability and structured progression of coaching with the commercial judgment and direct strategic input of senior advisory.
